16.6 million tune in to see whodunnit in Eastenders first ever live episode

February 20th, 2010 by Liv

Friday night saw a historic episode from BBC soap Eastenders.

To celebrate 25 years, the bosses decided to broadcast a live episode to reveal who killed Archie Mitchell, as he was struck by the bust of Queen Victoria in the Vic on Christmas day.

The episode pulled in 16.6 million viewers, not inlcuding those who have recorded it, or watched a BBC3 repeat or on iplayer. Executive producer Diederick Santer said, that these viewing ratings were the ‘icing on our silver anniversary cake’.

The show revealed Archies murderer to be Stacey Slater, who confessed after her new husband Bradley Branning fell to his death, while trying to evade the police who suspected him of murder.

Actress Lacey Turner had been suffering from flu syptoms including loss of her voice throughout the day, and the BBC had said that they had lined up another 9 potential endings if she couldn’t perform.

Stacey Confesses after Bradley jumps

The episode saw many of the potential culprits involved in dramatic scenes, inluding Phil Mitchell, Ian Beale, Peggy Mitchell, Bradley Branning, Ronnie Mitchell and Janine Butcher. The finger had been pointed to almost everyone in the square, including Ben Mitchell and Dot Branning. Bookies had said that up to £1 million had been placed on the outcome of the show, where Stacey was an outsider at 20/1.

The anniversary also celebrated some of the soaps most memorable characters including Angie and Den Watts and Arthur Fowler, as Dot and Ian watched an old video tape.

The show was a tricky production; it used 400 different shots, shot by 36 cameramen rather than the usual 4. Luckily it all went to plan, with the exception of Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning, fluffing a couple of lines at the begining. 51 members of the cast were involved.

Despite good ratings, they were a far cry from some of the classic eastenders episodes of the past including 31 million who tuned un to watch Den Watts serve wife Angie with divorce papers on Christmas Day in 1986.
